Think a bag of cold patch can fix your potholes? Here's what you should know! Cold mix asphalt relies on emulsified binders at ambient temperatures, so it only achieves minimal compaction and temporary strength-making it unsuitable for lasting repairs. Within weeks, and especially under freeze-thaw cycles, cold patches often ravel, wash out, or deform, leading to recurring potholes and added maintenance.
Hot mix asphalt is produced at 300–350 °F, allowing aggregates to bond fully. When properly laid and compacted, it reaches over 95% density and delivers a robust surface that can last 15–30 years under heavy traffic and temperature extremes. If you have the option, always choose hot mix over the big-box “quick fix" if you can! *The only exceptions to this is for temporary or emergency repairs and in situations where hot mix asphalt is not feasible.
